What Is Text to 3D Generation?

Text to 3D is an AI technology that interprets a written description and generates a full three-dimensional model — geometry, mesh, and PBR textures — without any input image. It is the 3D equivalent of text-to-image tools like DALL-E or Midjourney, but the output is a 3D file you can import into a game engine, render in Blender, or send to a 3D printer.

Under the hood, Image3D's text-to-3D is powered by Hunyuan3D v3 from Tencent — one of the leading open-weight 3D generation models as of 2026. It uses a diffusion-based approach to generate 3D representations from text embeddings, producing coherent geometry and material properties in a single pass.

Unlike image-to-3D (where you start with a photo), text-to-3D starts from nothing but words. This makes it ideal for concept prototyping, game asset exploration, and generating objects that don't exist as photographs — fantasy creatures, sci-fi props, invented architectural elements.

How to Use Image3D's Text to 3D

1

Open Image3D Studio and select "Text to 3D"

Go to image3d.io/tool/. At the top of the Studio, you will see two tabs: "Image to 3D" and "Text to 3D." Click the "Text to 3D" tab. A text prompt area will appear below.

2

Write a detailed prompt

Type a description of the 3D object you want. More specific is better. Include: what the object is, what material it is made of, key visual features, and scale. Example: "a medieval knight's sword, double-edged steel blade with slight taper, crossguard with ornate engravings, wrapped leather grip, pommel shaped like a dragon head."

3

Choose quality tier

Standard (10 credits) is fast for quick prototyping. Pro (100 credits) uses higher-resolution processing and produces significantly better geometry and textures. Pro is recommended for any text-to-3D prompt where you want production-quality output.

4

Generate and preview

Click Generate. Standard takes ~10 seconds; Pro takes 60–90 seconds. While generating, you can see the progress indicator. When complete, the 3D model appears in the interactive viewer — rotate it to check all angles before downloading.

5

Download your 3D model

Choose your format: GLB for game engines and AR, OBJ for Blender, STL for 3D printing, or PLY for research workflows. All formats include PBR textures generated from your text prompt. The model is automatically saved to your Assets library.

Text to 3D vs. Image to 3D — Which Should You Use?

Scenario Text to 3D Image to 3D
Quick prototyping / ideation Best choice Slower (need to make image first)
Exact visual control over appearance Limited (AI interprets prompt) Best choice
Fictional / non-photographic subjects Best choice Needs AI image generator first
Product photos / real-world objects Less accurate to real object Best choice
Character / creature design from scratch Good — fast iteration Good with AI-generated reference
Client deliverable / production asset Refine with image-to-3D for precision Best choice

Effective Text-to-3D Prompt Examples

The quality of your output depends heavily on prompt specificity. Here are examples of prompts that produce strong results:

Weapons / Tools

"A blacksmith's war hammer, iron head with rune engravings, worn wooden handle wrapped in leather cord, aged patina"

Specify material + key details + finish/condition for best textures

Vehicles / Machinery

"A compact drone with four rotors, matte black carbon fiber body, camera gimbal underneath, LED indicator lights on arms"

Include materials and distinguishing features; keep scope to a single object

Fantasy / Sci-Fi Props

"An ancient crystal orb on a three-legged brass stand, the orb contains swirling purple mist, rune carvings on the brass legs"

Works especially well for invented objects with no real-world reference

Organic / Creatures

"A small stone golem, roughly humanoid, body made of stacked boulders with glowing orange cracks between them, no neck, fist-sized hands"

For creatures, describe body proportions and key visual characteristics

Frequently Asked Questions

What is text to 3D generation?

Text to 3D is AI technology that converts a written text description directly into a 3D model with geometry and textures — no input image needed. Image3D's implementation uses Hunyuan3D v3, one of the leading text-to-3D models in 2026.

How do I write a good text-to-3D prompt?

Describe: what the object IS (noun), what it is made OF (material), its key VISUAL FEATURES (shape, details), and its SIZE/SCALE. Avoid vague adjectives — say "rough stone texture" not "looks cool." The more specific the geometry and material information, the better the 3D output.

Is text to 3D or image to 3D better for production use?

Image to 3D gives more precise control for production assets because you design the exact look first in an image generator. Text to 3D is better for rapid prototyping, ideation, and generating objects without photographic references. Image3D supports both in the same Studio.

What AI model powers Image3D's text-to-3D?

Image3D uses Hunyuan3D v3 from Tencent as the primary text-to-3D engine, with Tripo as a fallback. Hunyuan3D v3 is a state-of-the-art diffusion-based 3D generation model capable of producing detailed geometry and PBR textures from text descriptions.

How long does text to 3D generation take?

Standard tier: ~10 seconds. Pro tier: 60–90 seconds (higher quality textures and geometry). Both are dramatically faster than manual 3D modeling, which takes hours to days per asset.

What file formats does text-to-3D export?

GLB (recommended for game engines, AR, and web), OBJ (for Blender, Maya, Cinema 4D), STL (for 3D printing), and PLY (for research and point cloud workflows). All formats include AI-generated PBR textures from your text prompt.
